The collection principally consists of legal case files, including affidavits, depositions, motions, District Court and Appellate briefs, exhibits, appendices, transcripts and correspondence, and provides a wealth of information about the politics and culture of rank-and-file organizing. Series 1, Burton Hall, General (1 linear foot), consists of miscellaneous correspondence, writings, clippings, memoranda, and union democracy and other briefs by other attorneys. Series 2, Union Democracy Cases (26 linear feet), is organized into eight subseries: A. Teamsters, B. Construction, C. Maritime, D. Transportation, E. Entertainment, F. Garment Workers, G. Hospital Workers, H. Unions. Series 3, Employment Discrimination (0.5 linear feet) consists of one case file.

Burton Hall (1929-1991) was born in South Orange, New Jersey, in 1929. He graduated from Williams College in 1951 and Yale Law School in 1954. He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1957 and worked as a lawyer for a private firm and the Federal Aviation Agency before setting up his own practice in 1960 as a labor lawyer.
